Help: Selling

Selling on Fairy Godcloset couldn’t be easier. Here's a handy summary and full details are below.

1. Choose some new or gently used brand-name clothing or accessories that could use a new home.

2. Register at Fairy GodCloset by clicking the "Register" tab on the magenta colored navigation bar.

3. Select your first item to sell. Click "Sell" on the magenta navigation tab.

4. Follow the prompts to create your listing. Things to consider:

  • Choose the category that best describes your item.
  • Decide if you’d like to put your items up for bid or sell at a fixed price.
  • Post descriptions and photos of your items.
  • Create a title for your item. Hint: include maker, type and size
  • Decide what you will accept as your starting price and if you have a reserve (or minimum acceptable price)
  • Determine how you will accept payment. Most people will chose "Checkout"
  • How will you accept payment? We recommend using a PayPal account. If you have one, all you have to do is include the email account associated with your PayPal account.
  • Determine how you plan to ship the item. To make it easier for you to calculate fees, we've partnered with a company that offers a calculated shipping quote. Just use "Calculated Options" instead of "Shipping Rates" enter the approximate weight and choose the type of shipper you wish to use.  The system will then calculate shipping for you once you have a buyer based on their zip code and your chosen shipping option.
  • Create a description and list condition.
  • Choose how long the item should be listed and how many times you want us to automatically relist it for you.
  • Choose from a host of listing enhancements if you like.
  • Upload pictures
  • Review your listing and post it.

5. Ship item to winning bidder and get paid.

Detailed Information for Sellers

To keep our marketplace safe and honest for everyone, all sellers are required to place a valid credit card on file. (Please note that you will be entering this information on a secure website, as indicated by the "s" in "https" in the URL.).  All balances are aggregated and all fees owed are due on the first of each month.  Any account holding a balance on the 1st of the month is automatically charged their balance on the credit card on file, unless prior to the 1st of the month you log in to your account and initiate payment using a different card or PayPal.  You may also initiate payment prior to the 1st of the month by logging into your account.

Whenever you incur any fees (e.g. for listing, listing enhancement, final sale or closet monthly fee) that are owed to Fairy GodCloset, you will receive a statement listing the fees owed.  We may also periodically send you statements with any unpaid fees.

Failure to keep a valid credit card on file and/or to pay for fees could result in termination of your account or selling privileges in addition to any other remedies we may have at law.

Manipulating a bid in any way and for any reason is strictly prohibited! Sellers may not participate in any sale that circumvents or manipulates our fee structure, the billing process, or fees owed to FairyGodCloset.com. Specifically, you may not arrange with a buyer to purchase an item if you de-list it here for them to purchase later, thereby circumventing our fees. Such action may result in suspension of your selling privileges and/or immediate termination of your account.

Types of Listings

There are two ways in which you as a seller using FairyGodCloset.com may conduct transactions: 1) fixed price sales of a given item or 2) auction of a given item. For any one individual item, the seller must select either a fixed price sale or an auction.  Sellers must establish payment terms when setting up their listings. Seller may not list any one individual item for both types of sale. If seller selects to host a “Closet” your closet may include a mix of both fixed price sale items and auction items.   To list an item for sale on FairyGodCloset.com, you must have the legal authority to sell that item.

Fixed Price - A Fixed Price listing does not allow bidding.  The seller specifies their only acceptable price for the item(s).  You can sell one item or multiple identical items with one Fixed price listing. Because there is no bidding on fixed priced listings, all items are Buy Now.

Auction - A Traditional Auction listing allows you to sell items to the highest bidder. You specify the starting price, and people bid against each other in specified (50 cent) bid increments.  Traditional Auctions allow the Seller to set both a Reserve and Buy Now price.   When listing a Traditional Auction, the quantity of goods is equal to one.  For example:

   - One pair of jeans has a quantity of 1.
   - A lot of 5 different shirts have a qty of 1 because they are all sold together as one

If you have 5 shirts that are exactly the same and you want to sell each one separately, then use the Dutch Auction format.

Dutch Auction – A Dutch Auction is another name for a multiple item auction.  These listings are for selling more than one identical item individually in an auction format.  Rather than creating a listing for each item, you can sell them all, one at a time, with one listing.  Buyers can submit a bid for one, or multiple items in a Dutch Auction listing.  When there are multiple buyers for a Dutch Auction, the item’s final cost is the lowest successful bid by the highest bidders.

Buy Now - When listing an item, you have the option of setting a Buy Now price.  The Buy Now feature allows instant purchasing. The Buy Now feature is available for the following listing types:

   - Traditional Auction listings.
   - All Fixed Price listings - The Fixed Price is automatically the Buy Now price.

Reserve - The Reserve price is the absolute minimum dollar amount you will accept for an item.  Buyers are notified after placing their bid if it is below the Reserve price.  If a Buyer's maximum bid is greater than the Reserve price, the Reserve is automatically met and that user is the high bidder.  The ability to set a Reserve price is only available to Traditional Auctions.

Additionally, prohibited are any counterfeit, knock-off, fake or item that could violate a brand’s intellectual property rights, copyright, trademark or other right. Selling fakes is a crime. FairyGodCloset.com will report sellers of counterfeit items to appropriate authorities. If you cannot prove an item’s authenticity, do not try to sell it here. FairyGodCloset.com prohibits the listing or sale of any item that is illegal to sell under any applicable law, statute, ordinance, or regulation.

Additionally, you may select from subcategories to narrow down the type and size of the item.

There are several visual effects and listing options available. These are optional and may require a fee. For a complete listing of fees please see the Fees page.
1. Home Page Featured - These listings will be randomly selected to be displayed on our main Browse page.
2. Category Featured - The listing will be featured above other items in category listings.
3. Home Page Gallery Listing - The listing will be featured in the gallery section.

7. Auto Relist - Automatically relist an unsold item. (a multiple item listing that has had at least one sale will not be auto relisted). Relisting up to 2 times is free of charge but does not include free renewal of listings enhancements.

To list items for sale you must first enter the item information.

The following fields are required:
Category - This is the category and/or sub-category where your listing will be located.
Title - The title of your listing. Remember: out of respect for brand names we love and to abide by intellectual property laws, only include a brand name in your listing or title if you know the item is authentic and can prove it if asked. If you can't prove it don't list it. If your item is like a brand name but is not a brand name, do not list it as being "comparable" to such a brand name.
Quantity -The quantity of goods to be sold or traded.
Item Location - The location the items will be shipped from.
Detailed Description - Any information about the item(s) for sale or trade. Descriptions must be original (written by you) rather than lifted from manufacturer tags, as that would infringe on the manufacturer's intellectual property rights.
Item Condition – choose from New with tags, New, Gently Used/Excellent, Gently Used/Good, Fair, Poor
Selling Method - Traditional Auction, Dutch Auction, Fixed Price Listing.
Number of Days to Run - The listing duration.  You may choose the Start dates for the listing.
Starting Price - The lowest acceptable price for your listing (unless you specify a Reserve), or the cost of goods for a Fixed Price listing.

  • Establishing What Payment Methods You'll Accept
We recommend that you conduct transactions through a PayPal account.  We do not recommend that sellers accept checks, money orders or cashiers checks.  Additionally, this site is for use and transactions by those residing in the US.  We strongly urge you not to agree to accept international currency as payment and not to agree to ship to addresses outside of the US.
  • For transactions whose value exceeds $100, we urge you to consider establishing an account with an escrow service vendor that can provide measures in ensuring that both parties are satisfied before goods and funds are released.

The following fields are optional:
Size, including European conversions
Hit Counter Style
Home & Browse Page Featured enhanced listing
Category Featured enhanced listing
Home & Browse Page Gallery listing enhancement
Highlight Listing enhancement

From The Ex-Boyfriend Collection - Have your own Ex-Boyfriend Collection? We’re happy to help you unload your baggage and mend your broken heart with cash.  Tell the story of your item here in up to 1000 characters. Don’t spare one juicy detail, but rise above and leave out names, addresses and identifying info.
PayPal Email - Supply your PayPal email address and a link will be created for the winning bidder(s) to make a payment.  We recommend this option for non-professional sellers due to PayPal’s consumer protection options.
Shipping Cost -  The additional charge for shipping and handling the item(s). You may only charge reasonable shipping and handling. Any attempts to avoid fees by charging a low purchase price that is offset by unusually high shipping is unacceptable and is grounds for action up to and including suspension of your selling privileges or account.
Who Will Pay Shipping? Indicate if the Buyer or Seller will pay for the cost of shipping the item(s).
Auto Relist: Allows you the option of having your items automatically relist if they go unsold (a multiple item listing that has had at least one sale will not be auto relisted).

Completing the Sale

We make it easy for you to complete your transaction. You can require the buyer to pay you in one of three ways:

Upon Invoice: During listing creation choose Option “Invoice:  Create and send invoice before allowing checkout”.  When your item sells you can automatically generate an invoice and save or email it to the buyer straight from your FairyGodcloset account.  That emailed invoice directs the buyer to login where they can click the link to pay you directly on PayPal or through credit cards if you are a business set up to accept credit cards.

Before Invoice: During listing creation choose option “Checkout:  Allow checkout before sending an invoice”. When your item sells to a buyer they are directed to the payment method(s) you’ve selected where they can pay before receiving an invoice from you.

Immediate Payment: During listing creation choose option “Immediate Payment:  Require immediate checkout for Buy Now purchases.” If you’ve created a Buy Now option, once your item sells a buyer is directed to the payment method(s) you’ve selected where they are required to pay you before receiving an invoice from you.

You may also contact the buyer at any time after the sale is finalized to arrange other payment terms. However we recommend PayPal due to its ease of use and consumer protection programs.
